The centrepiece for 'ancient forest.' Białowieża is the best-preserved fragment of the primeval lowland forest that once covered the European Plain — and home to the largest wild herd of European bison on Earth.

🏞️ Natural beauty

A UNESCO World Heritage transboundary site straddling Poland and Belarus. What sets it apart is that it was never cleared or 'tidied': multi-layered, uneven-aged stands of oak, hornbeam, lime, spruce and pine, with enormous volumes of standing and fallen deadwood that make it a biodiversity ark — 250+ bird species, wolves, lynx, and the heaviest land animal in Europe, the żubr (European bison).

🧭 Places to see

🏛️ History

The forest survived because it was a royal and tsarist hunting reserve for six centuries. The last wild European bison was shot here in 1921; the species was rebuilt from a handful of zoo animals and reintroduced to Białowieża from 1952 — this forest is the cradle of that recovery, one of conservation's great success stories.

🏕️ Camp & stay

🏕️ Tent night: Camping U Michała

ul. Krzyże 11, ~500 m from the park centre. 80 pitches, hot showers, electric hookups, dishwashing, and a campfire/grill area — quiet, right on the forest edge.

Backup: A room in the village (Hotel Żubrówka or a pension) if the weather — or the mosquitoes — turn.

Getting there & charging

Białowieża is genuinely remote — charge in Białystok on the way in, as fast charging in the village is limited; arrive topped up. Book the Strict Reserve guide before you leave home (limited daily places). Bring insect repellent and long sleeves for dawn/dusk in the forest.
